Authors' objectives: To discuss issues with robotic surgery, including evidence of its efficacy (compared with nonrobotic alternatives), cost, surgeon learning curve, and its impact on health care delivery. We focused on prostatectomy and hysterectomy, the most common robotic procedures.
Authors' recommendations: It is critical to determine the clinical outcomes, costs, and impact on the health care system of new technologies such as robotic surgery to inform health care policy as well as patient and provider decision making.
