Authors' objectives:
Antimicrobial central venous catheters are intended to prevent central line-associated blood stream infections (CLABSIs) by coating or otherwise incorporating external or internal and external surfaces of the catheter with an antimicrobial agent. Some of the compounds used on currently marketed catheters include the antiseptic combination of chlorhexidine and silver sulfadiazine (CSS); the antibiotic combination of minocycline and rifampicin (M-R); and a compound of silver, platinum, and carbon black (SPC).
