Action plans for individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): a rapid review

Authors' recommendations: Based on 1 systematic review that evaluated the effectiveness of action plans with or without limited education (education sessions up to 1 hour in length) compared with usual care, the following conclusions were reached: - Action plans significantly increase antibiotic and corticosteroid use during an acute exacerbation. - Action plans significantly increase patient knowledge about COPD and what actions to take during an exacerbation. - Action plans do not impact health care utilization or other clinical outcomes including health related quality of life, mortality, lung function, functional capacity, symptoms, anxiety, or depression.
