Authors' objectives: To determine if patient self-testing (PST), alone or in combination with self-adjustment of doses (patient self-management [PSM]), is associated with a reduction in mortality, thromboembolic and bleeding events, quality of life or satisfaction, compared with usual care.
Authors' recommendations: Compared with standard monitoring, PST and PSM of anticoagulation therapy showed reductions in both all-cause mortality and major thromboembolic events without an increase in bleeding events in highly motivated adults. Both mortality and thromboembolic events were decrease greater for PSM. Self-efficacy was the only one aspects of quality of life of patients that improved.
