[Safety of natural therapies with direct impact on health: Acupuncture]

Authors' objectives: To assess the safety of acupuncture for the treatment of any indication, including potential adverse effects induced by the use of this technique.
Authors' recommendations: According to the scientific evidence available, acupuncture has a variety of adverse effects, which may range from mild to severe. The occurrence of mild adverse effects is common in acupuncture, with an incidence rate of 8.34% per 100 patients, although incidence values range from 0 to 37.4%. The most common mild adverse effects are hemorrhages, hematomas and pain in the puncture site. Acupuncture rarely has severe adverse effects, its incidence rate per 100 patients ranging from 0 to 0.02%. Acupuncturists' training and experience is essential for a safe acupuncture therapy.
