Living related donor small bowel transplantation for intestinal failure

Authors' objectives:
Intestinal failure is a complex metabolic process of varying etiology that can be acute or chronic, complete or partial, and permanent or reversible. The most common cause of small bowel failure is short bowel syndrome (SBS). SBS is characterized by insufficiencies in the length or absorptive capacity of the small intestine due to disease or trauma, which prevents a patient from receiving adequate oral nutrition. For many years, total parenteral nutrition (TPN) was the only option for patients with intestinal failure, and those who developed TPN-related complications had a poor prognosis. Cadaveric small bowel transplantation (SBT) is the transplantation of a small bowel allograft for the purpose of restoring intestinal function and eliminating or reducing the need for TPN in patients with irreversible intestinal failure.
