Authors' objectives:
1) To compare the technical features ofthe cardiopulmonary derivation units specified by the marketing material of the products marketed by different dealers in Catalonia during the period 1994-95;
2) to analyse, by means of a systematic review of the scientific evidence, whether the differences observed in the design of this type of product may influence clinical outcomes.
The cardiopulmonary derivation system, also called extracorporeal circulation circuit (ECC), is a circuit external to the body which temporarily substitutes for the functions of the heart and lungs. This system is mainly used in open heart surgery procedures such as coronary artery by-pass and valvular exchange. The existence of an ECC allows the heart to be stopped andgives a surgical area free of blood.
Authors' results and conclusions:
1) No studies have been identified which show significant differences in the post-operative clinical outcomes between the oxygenators and reservoirs in the market.
2) the main analysis parameters that should be considered when purchasing the analysed products are:
a) availability of a registry number from the Ministry of Health;
b) type of oxygenator (membrane vs. bubble);
c) type and surface of the membrane, and
d) feed volume.
3) The selection decision between different types of a specific product according to endpoint is generally more influenced by ergonomic reasons than by the differences in efficacy.
