Authors' objectives:
The objectives of the present health technology assessment (HTA) report were to (1) summarize the evidence on efficacy, safety and cost effectiveness of SMBG for adults with type 2 diabetes not treated with insulin, (2) analyze social aspects related to use of SMBG, and (3) examine pharmacoepidemiological aspects of using SMBG test strips in Québec.
Authors' recommendations:
Appropriate blood glucose monitoring helps prevent the development of diabetic complications. The best indicator is this regard is glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) measured every three months. However, to ensure relatively tight control of their blood glucose, affected persons often rely on self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) using test strips and a blood glucose meter. SMBG is widely used, and is recommended in type 1 diabetes and for those with type 2 diabetes who are treated with insulin. The effectiveness of SMBG is nevertheless controversial for people with type 2 diabetes not treated with insulin.
