Authors' recommendations: Measurement of the concentration of hemoglobin (Hb) in blood is used to detect anemia. Hb is traditionally measured by laboratory analysis of a sample obtained by venipuncture. Fingerstick devices for collection of blood from capillaries in the fingertip are also available for performing rapid analysis of Hb levels. These methods create hazardous waste, require the patient to undergo a needlestick, can expose healthcare workers to blood-borne pathogens, and may require the patient to return for an additional visit because of the time required to perform and interpret clinical laboratory analyses. Rapid, point-of-care tests for Hb assessment have been developed.
