The use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) to improve treatment adherence in patients with diabetes

Authors' recommendations:
Information communication technology (ICT) (i.e., cellular phone applications, web-based services) is being investigated as a method for increasing adherence to self-management behaviors in patients with diabetes. Communication may either be 1- or 2-way between patient and health practitioner using these technologies. For example, with 1-way communication, the short message service (SMS) on cellular phones may be used to send automatic text messages containing reminders to engage in self-care behaviors or motivational statements to patients. With 2-way technology, patients may send data to their healthcare provider and receive feedback on their behavior and diabetes control. With some systems, data may be viewed in graphical form or websites may offer forums and peer groups to offer additional support for diabetes self-management.
