English
Authors' recommendations: Low back pain (LBP) is a common ailment affecting up to 80% of all people at some point in their lifetime and approximately 28% of adults annually in the United States. The immune system protein (cytokine), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-) has been implicated in playing a role in LBP. TNF has been identified in human herniated lumbar disc tissue (including the nucleus pulposus, ligamentum flavum, posterior annulus, and the annulus fibrosus), and in adult lumbar degenerative disc tissue. TNF- is secreted by immune system cells as a reaction to a foreign substance. TNFacts as a messenger between immune system cells, calling them to action, which results in an inflammatory reaction, and which could contribute to LBP in patients with lumbar disc disease.
