Authors' recommendations:
Umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT) is an alternative source of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells for patients with hematological diseases that may be cured by allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT). While the largest successful experience with UCBT has been in the treatment of patients with hematological malignancies (e.g., leukemia, lymphoma, myelodysplastic syndromes), it has also been used to treat patients with many other inherited and acquired conditions such as aplastic anemia, metabolic disorders and autoimmune diseases. Other graft sources for SCT include bone marrow and peripheral blood.
