English
Authors' recommendations: The goal of risk-reducing or prophylactic mastectomy, defined as the surgical removal of 1 or both breasts before cancer develops, is to reduce the risk of breast cancer and potentially increase survival in women who are at high risk for the disease. Women at high risk for breast cancer include those with a strong family history of breast cancer, the presence of inherited mutations in 1 of 2 breast cancer susceptibility genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2), previous cancer in 1 breast, or biopsies showing lobular carcinoma in situ and/or atypical hyperplasia of the breast.
