Record ID 32014000369
English
Authors' recommendations: Bilateral prophylactic oophorectomy (PO) is a surgical procedure that removes both ovaries and is often accompanied by removal of the fallopian tube, when it is referred to as risk-reducing salpingooophorectomy (RRSO). The purpose of PO is to reduce the risk for ovarian, fallopian tube, and peritoneal cancers, especially in women at high risk due to a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, or the presence of mutations in the breast cancer 1 or 2 (BRCA1/2) gene.
