Platelet function assays for patients on antiplatelet therapy undergoing cardiac surgery

Authors' recommendations:
Patients on antiplatelet therapy (APT) require careful management before, during, and after cardiac surgery. APT reduces the risk of an ischemic event in high-risk patients but increases the risk of excessive bleeding and use of transfusions perioperatively. Platelet function assays (PFAs) offer the possibility of providing an objective measure of platelet function that can be used to predict the risk of excessive bleeding. PFAs therefore may improve patient care through the use of transfusion algorithms to aid decision making, and through a personalized approach to cardiac surgery management by determining optimum presurgical wait time for patients on APT.
