Autologous stem cell transplantation for metastatic primitive neuroectodermal tumors is performed to eradicate the cancer and return the immune system to full function. Stem cells are collected from the patient's peripheral blood or bone marrow and then transplanted back into the patient after an attempt to destroy the cancer and remaining stem cells with high-dose chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy.
