Authors' objectives: To assess the evidence available on the efficacy, safety and coverage policy related aspects on the use of cryopreservation of parathyroid glands in patients with hyperparathyroidism undergoing surgery.
Authors' recommendations: There is low methodological quality evidence suggesting that, in view of the low rate of success, cryopreservation of parathyroid glands for deferred autologous transplant would be a practice to be considered only at highly experienced centers. In addition, the cryopreservation period seems to significantly affect tissue function and effectiveness, therefore the deferral period should not be longer than strictly necessary. No clinical practice guidelines were found supporting the use of this technique as a therapeutic alternative for patients with hyperparathyroidism and surgical indication.
