Antibiotic prophylaxis for patients with cardiac or orthopedic implants undergoing dental procedures: a review of the clinical effectiveness and guidelines

Authors' recommendations: No randomized studies to support the use of oral antibiotic prophylaxis during dental procedures in patients with cardiac and orthopedic prostheses were identified. A single guideline for patients with orthopedic prostheses does not recommend oral antibiotic prophylaxis based on a lack of supportive evidence. Guidelines for cardiac implant patients have recommended both for and against prophylaxis in high risk-patients. While well-designed clinical studies are needed to address this medical issue, evidence may be difficult to obtain as such studies are likely to require very large sample sizes.
