Authors' objectives:

To provide guidance on the use of laparoscopic surgery for inguinal hernia.

Authors' recommendations: Guidance 1.1 For repair of primary inguinal hernia, open (mesh) should be the preferred surgical procedure. 1.2. For the repair of recurrent and bilateral inguinal hernia, laparoscopic surgery should be considered. 1.3. When laparoscopic surgery is undertaken for inguinal hernia, the totally extraperitoneal (TEP) procedure should be preferred. 1.4. Laparoscopic surgery for inguinal hernia should only be undertaken in those units with appropriately trained operating teams which regularly undertake these procedures.
