Authors' objectives:
Paravalvular periprosthetic leaks (PVL) are a rare but potentially hazardous complication, which occurs in 5-17 % after cardiac valve replacement (especially in mitral valves). In 5 % of patients PVLs are symptomatic and require treatment. The present report gives and overview of the currently best available evidence of percutaneous PVL closure.
Authors' recommendations:
The inclusion of percutaneous PVL closure in the hospital benefit catalogue is not recommended. Up to date, there is no evidence concerning the efficacy of percutaneous PVL-closure. Hence, percutaneous PVL-closure continues to be an experimental procedure. Furthermore, it remains unclear, if percutaneous
PVL-closure is superior to palliative drug treatment in inoperable patients. Currently, we do not recommend a re-evaluation of the intervention because there are no ongoing trials registered.
