                Authors' recommendations:
Intravenous (IV) catheters, including central venous catheters, are commonly used in hospitals to provide access for administration of fluids and medication, especially in intensive care units. IV catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) are associated with increased hospital costs, greater hospital lengths of stay, and significant morbidity and mortality. Usual care for preventing these infections consists of a coordinated infection-control program including staff education, and meticulous antisepsis during insertion and maintenance of the IV catheter. While there are multiple factors associated with the development CRBSI, an ongoing issue has been whether certain types of needleless connectors used with IV catheters are more likely to cause infection compared with other types.
