In-hospital patient bathing with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate cloths (Sage Products Inc.) for prevention of hospital-acquired infections

Record ID 32013000834
English
Authors' recommendations: Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), also known as healthcare-associated infections, are infections that occur in patients who are hospitalized in a healthcare setting and who are receiving medical or surgical interventions. Largely preventable, HAIs affect approximately 1 in every 20 inpatients and are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States. These infections prolong hospitalization and increase costs. Patient bathing with an antiseptic such as 4% chlorhexidine gluconate has been evaluated for decreasing the number of microorganisms on the skin, in an attempt to decrease the incidence of HAIs. Despite their widespread use, it has not been conclusively shown that bathing or showering with these antiseptics consistently decreases infection rates or long-term outcomes. Cloths impregnated with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate are now available and are also being used for in-hospital patient cleansing.
