Authors' recommendations:
To promote the utility of psychiatric service and fundamentally improve mental health of people, this study aims (Ed note: purpose statements should be written in present tense) to investigate the current status on limited use of psychiatric service and to determine its unmet needs in patients with mental illness.
A cross-sectional survey was performed on psychiatric outpatients in 9 university hospitals in Korea, from October 2011 through February 2012. A total of 737 patients' answers were finally included in this analysis. Many psychiatric patients could not immediately visit the psychiatric department mainly due to the lack of recognition, suggesting that publicity and education for the general public and physicians in other medical departments would be needed. Also, an extension of information sharing and accessible suppliers for psychiatric services would be demanded to promote utility of psychiatric services in patients with mental illness in Korea.
