Authors' recommendations: It is estimated that 86 cases of acute appendicitis per 100,000 people occur annually, with an estimated 70,000 pediatric appendectomies performed in the United States each year. Historically, the standard treatment for appendicitis has been open appendectomy. Recently, laparoscopic appendectomy has gained popularity among surgeons and patients due to its advantages such as a reduced risk of wound infection, reduced postoperative pain, shorter hospital stay, and more rapid return to daily activities. In laparoscopic appendectomy, closure of the appendiceal stump is a critical step. Inadequate closure can lead to intra-abdominal surgical site infection or life-threatening events such as fistulas, peritonitis, and sepsis. The most widely employed techniques in appendiceal stump closure include use of an endostapler, endoligature (endoloop), metal or polymeric clips, and bipolar endocoagulation.
