Authors' recommendations: Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) are one of the most common HAIs and are associated with increased hospital costs, greater length of stay, and significant morbidity. The standard of care for preventing these infections includes meticulous antisepsis during insertion and maintenance of the central venous catheter.
