Authors' recommendations: This study was designed to investigate suicide in the elderly in terms of regional differences including risk factors at the regional level. We calculated the crude standardized mortality ratio (SMR) and Hierarchical Bayesian (HB) estimates for elderly suicides in each of the 248 districts in Korea during 2006–2010. Spatial correlations and the conditional autoregressive (CAR) model, a Bayesian spatial model, were used to find significant regional characteristics of elderly suicide. When the CAR model was applied by using risk factors (excluding the factor with the greatest correlation with other risk factors), the risk factors assumed to affect the suicide rate in the elderly included physical activities, smoking rate, suicide attempts in the past, mean educational attainment, quality of life, and living alone. The range of crude SMR and HB estimates were 0.15–2.4 (90% range 0.61–1.65) and 0.5–2.1 (90% range 0.67–1.49), respectively. This research presents the spatial patterning of elderly suicide across 248 districts and the risk factors for suicide at the district-level in Korea.
