Authors' recommendations: Overall BZD dosage was lower than the WHO defined daily dose, but BZD prescription was frequent. The average national prescribing prevalence per 100 people per one year was 23.7% for ≥1 day, 7.8% for ≥30 days, 3.2% for ≥180 days. BZD prescription was much more frequent among elderly people (≥ 65 years old) and the one-year prescription trend was similar during the five years of the study period. The risk for fracture was higher in patients with BZD prescription than in people without BZD prescription. In particular, elderly people who were 65 years old or older and were prescribed long-acting BZD had higher OR than other groups. People with short-term BZD prescription or exposure in the early period from BZD initial prescription had trends of higher risk for fracture than those with long-term use or exposure in the late period.
