Authors' objectives:
To draw up quality indicators for evaluation of laser surgery in the treatment of BPH, based on scientific evidence and expert consensus.
Authors' recommendations:
A set of 21 indicators was drawn up for assessing the quality of the various BPH laser therapies.
The panel of experts considered all 19 indicators initially proposed as suitable for measuring the quality of the process. The standard of only one indicator was rated as questionable as a result of disagreement among the experts, though it was not discarded since it had not been judged unsuitable.
Two new indicators, pertaining to the safety of the technique and the appropriateness of the activity, were incorporated at the suggestion of the members of the panel of experts.
The collaboration and participation of expert professionals is of the essence when it comes to drawing up quality indicators and standards suitable for clinical practice.
The modified RAND/UCLA consensus method allows for professionals to interact without having to make trips that can interfere with their health-care activity, though the lack of face-to-face meetings does tend to make the consensus process longer, in as much as a greater number of consensus rounds are required.
Participation by the panel of experts was very active and their suggestions have indeed led to more accurate and complete indicators being drawn up for the purpose of assessing the quality of surgical treatment of BPH.
