The goal of intraoperative monitoring (IOM) during treatment of spinal cord trauma or spinal cord tumors is to reduce the incidence of iatrogenic spinal cord injuries and neurological deficits and to maximize postoperative neurologic function. IOM of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) has been in widespread use since the 1990s.
