Authors' recommendations: Each year in the United States, approximately 37 million people develop chronic sinusitis. About one-third of these people see a physician for treatment of symptoms such as congestion, facial discomfort, headache, and general discomfort. Since there are many potential causes for chronic sinusitis, treatments vary and may include antibiotics, steroids, decongestants, and antihistamines. Patients who have persistent or recurring chronic sinusitis may require a surgical approach. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a widely accepted procedure for chronic sinusitis refractory to medical treatment. Balloon sinuplasty is a newer technique which aims to supplement or improve the more conventional endoscopic techniques in the treatment of chronic sinusitis.
