Authors' recommendations: Dupuytren contracture is a chronic incurable condition that affects the connective tissue (fascia) in the palm of the hand, which covers the tendons responsible for flexing the fingers. The disease causes toughening and contracting of the fascia. Over time, the formation of tissue knots and thick cords under the skin pull the finger(s) into a permanently bent position. The exact cause is unknown, but the disease is more common in men and in those with diabetes, seizure disorders, and epilepsy. The most common treatment is fasciectomy, in which the diseased fascia is surgically excised through open incisions in the hand and fingers.
