Authors' objectives:
While in the USA and the United Kingdom, day surgery has already been established in the beginning of the 20th century, in Austria day surgery has been developed many years later since the end of the 20th century. Reasons
for that are the lack of financial incentives, the health care system structures and shorter waiting lists for surgery. The Austrian government changed the laws to increase incentives for day surgery, but this has been without great
success so far. The aim of the systematic review was to summarise evidence of clinical trials on the effectiveness and safety of day surgery.
Authors' recommendations:
Day surgery requires increasing attention in Austria which is especially evident from international comparisons. If developed further, apart from efficacy and safety, organisational and planning issues need to be taken into account
such as caseload/volumes or how to integrate day surgery into hospital processes appropriately. Finally, structural and financial incentives need to be developed further in Austria to increase day surgery cases.
