Authors' objectives:

The main objective of this project is to present well-informed, relevant, and realistic alternative policy options to the European Parliament on silicone (breast) implants.

Authors' recommendations: In summary, the option consisting of no complete ban, but the adoption and implementation of critical specific measures to increase and improve information for patients, tracking and surveillance, clinical guidelines, quality control and assurance and key research could be reasonably consistent with the philosophy underlying the criteria of the European precautionary principles and perhaps is the most balanced alternative after weighing the existing evidence.
