Deep brain stimulation for treatment-resistant depression

Record ID 32013000171
English
Authors' recommendations: Deep brain stimulation of anatomic areas that may be involved in depression is a reversible, nonlesioning treatment for patients with depression who do not respond to conventional therapy. The procedure involves the surgical/stereotactic implantation of bilateral quadripolar electrodes into the brain and a pulse generator under the skin, usually in the chest/infraclavicular area. Continual high-frequency electrical stimulation is delivered to brain regions that have been shown to have altered activity in depression.
