Radioactive seed localization (RSL) of nonpalpable breast lesions for surgical excision

Authors' recommendations: An estimated 13% of women in the United States will develop breast cancer during their lifetimes with close to 40,000 deaths per year. Increased utilization of screening mammography and better imaging methods have resulted in more breast cancers being detected as radiographic lesions only, i.e., before they are large enough for palpation(nonpalpable lesions). This has led to an increased need for image-guided localization of nonpalpable breast lesions prior to surgical excision or biopsy. The current standard of care for lesion localization is wire localization (WL), which involves the insertion of a wire into the breast lesion under radiologic guidance on the day of surgery. Radioactive seed localization (RSL) has been developed as an alternative to WL.
