Authors' recommendations:
Evidence from limited observational studies on patients undergoing hip or knee arthroplasty showed a positive correlation between metal exposure and positive LTT or LPT. LTT and LPT may be useful to identify patients with metal sensitivity before implantation, or to monitor their sensitivity to metals following implantation. LTT and LPT are however non-standardized assays; their accuracy, validity and reliability are yet to be determined. More work correlating the tests results to long-term clinical outcomes need to be done to determine the tests' clinical benefits. There was no evidence found on cost-effectiveness of the tests, and no guidelines were identified regarding their use.
