Authors' recommendations:
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that causes joint pain accompanied by varying degrees of functional limitation and reduced quality of life. It is the most common form of arthritis and one of the leading causes of pain and disability worldwide. However, although prevalence of osteoarthritis rises in frequency with age, it affects a substantial number of younger individuals. An estimated 27 million men and women in the United States are affected. Hip resurfacing arthroplasty is a surgical alternative to total hip replacement for patients with a diagnosis of osteoarthritis. A future total hip replacement is not precluded in patients who undergo resurfacing arthroplasty at a younger age since the femoral canal remains intact and the proximal femoral bone is preserved.
