Autologous fat grafting for postmastectomy breast reconstruction

Record ID 32012000589
English
Authors' recommendations: More than 96,000 breast cancer patients in the United States undergo breast reconstruction each year after mastectomy or lumpectomy. Breasts can be reconstructed using prosthetic implants alone or combined with the patient's own skin, fat, and muscle (tissue flaps). Breast reconstruction can sometimes result in less than optimal cosmetic and functional outcomes. In an attempt to improve outcomes following breast cancer surgery, researchers have investigated the use of autologous fat grafting injections in which adipose, or fatty tissue from another area of the patient's body such as the abdomen or buttocks, is used to correct contour and functional deformities of the breast.
