Authors' objectives:

Analyzes nitric oxide (NO) therapy, which is used primarily to treat patients with pulmonary hypertension. Although the FDA has not yet approved NO for use in humans, current evidence suggests that NO therapy is safe and effective. Key studies and case reports focusing on the clinical efficacy and utility of NO therapy are reviewed, and discussion of adverse effects, administration and monitoring, and cost issues is also provided. Results of a survey of UHC members on issues related to NO therapy are also included.
