Authors' recommendations:
Fecal incontinence is the inability to control the release of fecal matter. The reported prevalence of fecal incontinence in children varies widely, ranging from approximately 1% to 4%, depending on the age. Fecal incontinence can cause significant distress, embarrassment, and social stigma during childhood, and can have a significant psychological impact in this vulnerable population and their caregivers. Conservative therapy for fecal incontinence in children generally includes dietary changes, medications such as antidiarrheal agents, biofeedback, pelvic floor exercise, and the use of anal plugs.
