Surveillance of Barrett's oesophagus

Development and Evaluation Committee
Record ID 32000008152
English
Authors' objectives:

To summarise the available evidence on the surveillance of Barretts oesophagus.

Authors' recommendations: The Committee concluded that there is a lack of evidence to support the implementation of surveillance programmes for Barretts oesophagus and that the possibility of significant harm to patients cannot yet be excluded. Decisions in this area are hampered by the lack of a clear and consistent definition of Barretts oesophagus, the significant gaps in our understanding of its natural history, the wide variability of existing surveillance programmes and the poor quality of the evidence about the effectiveness of its management. In view of the vulnerability of the population concerned and the significant risk of harms from surgery, the Committee believed that high quality evidence for net benefit should be available before implementation of surveillance programmes for Barretts oesophagus.
