Authors' objectives:

In 2010, the Ministers of Health, Welfare and Sport and of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality of that day asked the Health Council of the Netherlands to examine what is known regarding the contribution of antibiotic use in food animal production to the presence of resistant bacteria in humans and what measures can be taken to reduce this contribution. The Health Council put together a Committee to answer this request for advice.

Authors' recommendations: This advisory report has been drawn up from the perspective of public health and in line with the implemented policy to reduce the use of antibiotics in food animal production. The Committee makes recommendations that are intended to result in a reduction in the use of antibiotics in general and some classes of antibiotics in particular. Antibiotic resistance is an international problem; some of the Committee's recommendations would therefore have more effect if they were to be adopted in an international context. However, the Committee is of the opinion that measures only taken in the Netherlands could certainly also lead to a reduction of the problem. The Committee also realises that, if its recommendations are adopted, they will ultimately not be able to be carried out without restructuring that is sometimes drastic. The responsibility for bringing about thiskind of restructuring goes further than just the food producers and pertains just as much to the market and the consumers. That issue, however, falls outside the scope of this advisory report.
