Authors' objectives:
The objective of this report was to assess the evidence that the use of reprocessed SUDs is safe, effective, and cost-effective.
Authors' recommendations:
The small number of studies that have considered clinical outcomes associated with the use of reprocessed SUDs are of variable quality and provide insufficient evidence to establish the safety and efficacy of this practice. The use of several types of reprocessed SUDs is cost-saving, if it is assumed that there are no adverse effects. There are insufficient data to establish the cost-effectiveness of reusing SUDs. Several legal, ethical, and psychosocial issues require consideration by those who fund and use reprocessed SUDs.
