Authors' objectives:

To develop appropriateness explicit criteria for pharmacological therapy in adult patients with bipolar disorder.

Authors' recommendations: In general, resulting appropriateness criteria for the pharmacological treatment of bipolar disorder patients are consistent with evidence available from randomized clinical trials and clinical practice guidelines. They cover a wide range of specific clinical situations, making them useful in the clinical practice guidelines development process or in health service research. In order to use these criteria as a decision making aid, they should be validated previously. Some uncertainty areas have been identified, which could be considered as relevant research topics.
