Authors' objectives:

A Colorectal Cancer Program between Primary and Secondary Care was implemented to decrease waiting-times of diagnosis and treatment of patients suspected of having colorectal cancer (CRC) in a Health Care District of the Community of Madrid in August 2004. A previous report assessed the implementation of the program by means of indicators and standards. This second study evaluates the program over a 3-year period and compares the rapid referral program with the routine and emergency referral pathways.

Authors' recommendations: Colorectal Cancer Program has introduced substantial changes in CRC diagnosis process that were maintained over a 3-year period. Rapid access pathway reduces colonoscopy waiting-times and it is an effective strategy for CRC diagnosis in early stages compared with routine pathway outcomes achieved.
