Authors' objectives:

The objective of this report is to determine safety and effectiveness of radiofrequency ablation of malignant tumours localized in the liver. To perform a cost-effectiveness analysis of radiofrequency ablation technology.

Authors' recommendations: Radiofrequency ablation for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma and liver metastases of colorectal cancer appears as a safe technique. The efficacy is not inferior to other local ablation techniques and compared against the surgical resection of available evidence does not establish a definitive conclusion because, although the only randomized study found no statistically significant difference in overall survival and disease-free survival, other non-randomized studies found better results in these variables with surgical resection.
