Authors' objectives:

To develop appropriateness explicit criteria for ultrasonography in breast pathology.

Authors' recommendations: The role of ultrasonography stands out in the characterization of palpable lesions in major and minor 35-year-old women with dense or fatty breasts without having previous mammography. In patients with a prior mammography realized the valuation of the experts identifies the ultrasonography as complementary technology of mammography with the 100% of scenarios as appropiate in case of dense breasts. Some aspects that can need more research in relation to the ultrasonography breast are patients´ subgroups stratified by intervals of age to differentiate groups of women in which are possible to start studies with ultrasonography. More studies are needed to establish clear conclusions about the role of ultrasonography in women with cancer diagnosed. It is necessary more studies with ultrasonography as screening technique in young women. New researches are needed in relation with the role of ultrasonography in the absence of palpable lesions and no defined with mammography. Also to study the follow-up with ultrasonography in women with probably benign lesions or BI-RADS 3 who allow to corroborate the absence of malignancy. Though there are some studies at present that give to ultrasonography a preponderant role in the screening of high-risk women, more evidence is needed to assure this function.
