Authors' objectives:

To assess the efficacy and safety of different pharmacological therapies for bipolar disorder.

Authors' recommendations: Scientific evidence of good quality is scarce, particularly for treatment of bipolar depression and for the long-term treatment. One of the main limitations is the applicability of results from randomized controlled trials to clinical practices. There are some large multicentric ongoing randomized controlled trials. It is important to wait for the results of these studies in order to increase the consistency of actual evidence.
