Authors' objectives:

The aim of this study was to develop appropriateness explicit criteria for carotid endarterectomy and endovascular treatment.

Authors' recommendations: The developed appropriateness criteria can be used to inform utilization studies, variability studies and to assist in the development of clinical practice guidelines. They also provide useful information for medical decision making for the indication of carotid revascularization procedures. However, these criteria must not replace medical judgment and their application to individual patients should be made cautiously, because individual factors may modify the risk-benefit ratio of these procedures.
