Authors' objectives:
Review and assess economics studies comparing the use of drug eluting stent versus bare metal and to perform a cost-effectiveness evaluation.
Authors' recommendations:
The use of DES in the patients with high risk indications: Lesion in a saphenous by-pass graft, lesion in left main artery totally occluded lesions and restenotic lesion is cost-effective for a 6 months long antiplatelet treatment. The drug eluting stent option could stop being cost-effective varying some of the basal conditions. More studies would be necessary to assess the effectiveness of drug eluting stent in each one of the indications in patients undergone a percutaneous coronary intervention with stent.
